Paradigm Shit Or Paradigm Shift? A Conversation With “Robin Hood Of The Banks” Enric Duran

As an anarchist, it’s kinda against the rules for me to hero worship…

But when presented with a man who essentially stole half a million euros from Spanish banks and used that money as a war chest to fund emancipatory, horizontal, peer-to-peer, and anti/post capitalist movements and projects in Europe well…

Let’s just say if I was inclined toward man-crushes, anticapitalist activist Enric Duran would be a reasonable candidate!!

And really, this spectacular action is just one glamorous achievement in a long list of successful acts of resistance and of building alternatives within the belly of the beast.

Perhaps most significant of these activities has been his work with the Catalan Integral Cooperative (CIC), a collective seeking to be a “grassroots counterpower” bringing together all the basic elements for constructive disobedience through a practice of self-organized direct democracy which integrates the needs of a community to survive: food, health, education, energy, and transport.

Expanding from the success of the Catalan Integral Cooperative (based in Catalan in Spain), Duran is now engaged with FairCoop and the upcoming launch of the associated cryptocurrency Faircoin 2 – a vision, a project with a goal of no less than a whole new kind of cooperative global financial system.

“Fair.coop is an open global cooperative, self-organized via the Internet and remaining outside nation-state control.

Its aim is to make the transition to a new world by reducing the economic and social inequalities among human beings as much as possible, and at the same time gradually contribute to a new global wealth, accessible to all humankind.

Fair.coop understands that the transformation to a fairer monetary system is a key element. Therefore, Faircoin was proposed as the cryptocurrency upon which to base its resource-redistribution actions and building of a new global economic system.”

Myself and Perth Indymedia’s Alex Whisson recently had the opportunity to speak with Duran (from an undisclosed location somewhere in Europe) about his vision for FairCoop, the launch of Faircoin 2, and the importance of projects such as these in breaking the uncategorically shitbox current economic and social paradigm.

As a counsellor and educator, Karun, from Perth, Australia, concentrated on mental health and suicide prevention, challenging orthodox biodeterminist approaches to care and wellness. Cowper coordinated social media for Occupy Perth, edited political zines, and got into journalism with Perth Indymedia on RTRFM, Western Australia’s most popular alternative radio station, reporting, producing, and hosting. Karun has covered the aboriginal suicide epidemic with a focus on the macropicture of issues of social justice, poverty among indigenous communities, and their general chastisement. He’s also covered the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, the Australian government’s complicity in the genocidal activity of the Indonesian government in West Papua New Guinea, and produced and conducted interviews with Anthony Loewenstein, Scott Ludlam, Richard Dennis, Julian Assange, Ken Colbung, (a highly revered indigenous community elder and healer who led an expedition to retrieve the head of one of his ancestors that had been kept in the United Kingdom) and other prominent figures.
